Hog Deer is distributed in Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, much of mainland southeast Asia. It is largely a grazer and prefers reverine vallyes and grassy flood plains.

This species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to IUCN Red List assessment, population of this species is decreasing all over its range. There apears to be 1400 to 1600 individuals in India. Habitat loss and fragmentation due to agriculture, residential and commercial development, mining are major threats to its survival in wild. Hunting and traping has caused another threat to its existence.
