Subspecies in India
Kashmir Red Deer, Kashmir Stag or Hangul is a taxonomically disputed species. Some authors consider this species as a separate species i.e. Cervus hanglu whereas others consider it as a subspecies of Red Deer i.e. C. elaphus. There is another claim that considers this as a subspecies of Cervus canadensis. Nevertheless, there is no conclusion yet.

Hangul historically has restricted distribution. It occurs in Jamm & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Its last surviving population occurs in Dachigam National Park. It maybe present in adjoining regions of Kashmir and Chamba Valley. Very little is known about its habits, but it is grazer as well as browser feeding on plant material in dense reverine forests in the high valley regions.
Conservation Status:This species is listed as Critically Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).
According to IUCN Red List assessment, population of this species is decreasing. Current estimate of its population is between 100 and 150 individuals. Major threat to its survival comes from habitat destruction due to mining, agriculture, overgrazing by livestock, and military activities. Poaching also causes a serious threat to its existence in wild.
