This species is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).According to IUCN Red List assessment, population of this species is decreasing all over its range. There is no estimate of its population available, however, the species exists patchily throughout its habitat. There are many subpopulations distributed widely which may range between 50 and 25000 mature individuals. Major threat to its survival come from marine water pollution, trapping and hunting, marine resource exploitation, overfishing, and oceanic transport.
