Indian Wild Ass is distributed only in saline desert of western India in Gujarat. It is found in Greater Rann of Kutch. It is well adapted to highly saline conditions. It is grazer as well as browser that largely feed on grasses and Prosopis.

This species is listed as Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/) 


According to IUCN Red List assessment, population of this species stable. It is estimated tohave about 28,000 mature individuals surviving in wild. Although its population is stable, its habitat is prone to several human activities such as mining, residential and commercial development.
