Subspecies in India
The genus name is sometimes spelled Naemorhaedus, Nemorhedus, Nemorrhaedus, Nemorrhedus or Nemorhaedus but the original spelling was Naemorhedus, which has not been formally emended, so the original spelling is the accepted one (Mammal Species of the World).

This species is native to a small region in the high lands of India, Tibet, Bhutan and northern Myanmar (especially, where the country boundaries meet). It is a diurnal species that feeds on both grasses and plant leaves in the forested areas of its native range.
Conservation Status:
This species is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).
According to IUCN Red List assessment, population this species is decreasing drastically. There are no recent estimates of its population but it may range from 800 to 10,000 mature individuals globally. Major threats to its population come from habitat loss and fragmentation due to residential and commercial development, overgrazing by livestock, mining etc. Hunting and trapping also cause severe damage to its population.
