Argali is the largest wild sheep species. It is distributed in the high elevations mountains. In India, it is distributed in Himalays of Ladakh and Tibet.

According to IUCN Red List assessment, population of this species is decreasing all over its range. There are no recent estimates of its population. Main threat to its existence in wild come from habitat fragmentation, overgrazing by livestock, mining, and hunting for skin.
