Subspecies in India
This species has a wide range of distribution. There are several subspecies of Ovis orientalis, out of which Ladakh Urial could be a separate subspecies. It is also argued to be a separate species, but tere is no final taxonomic conclusion.

Ladakh Urial is distributed at the higher altittudes of Ladakh, Kashmir, and northern Pakistan.

According to IUCN Red List assessment, population of this species is decreasing all over its range. Its population estimates are not available. Threats to its survival come mainly from agriculture, overgrazing by livestock, commercial/residential development and hunting for skin.
