[5:04 PM, 5/7/2020] Vikas Madhav Nagarajan: The suncus shrew is an endemic species of mountain shrew seen only in the south western ghats . It’s much more blacker compared to the normal house shrew ( also known as grey musk shrew ) that we see in the cities . I think it could be the hill shrew ( Suncus Niger) It’s a very rare species found mainly in Eravikulam - Munnar-Kodaikanal and in the upper Nilgiris and parts of Karnataka. It’s an endangered species ( 2011) and is an inhabitant of wet , humid and montane forests . It was very surprising to note that even shrews are now endangered in India ! I’ve only come across this twice , both times in kodaikanal . ( however the other one could have well been another species of shrew as I didn’t get a good look ) . The day’s shrew ( Suncus dayi) is another endangered species seen in the tamilnadu parts of the western ghats . It is also seen in Palani hills . Hence I’m not entirely sure which one of the two I have seen .
