This is an endemic species restricted to Andaman Islands.

According to IUCN Red List assessment, populatoin of this species is decreasing. There are no estimates of its population available, though it is observed that subpopluations from many previously known roosting sites have vanished. Major threat to its survival come from habitat loss and hunting.
